A woman named locally as Clare Smyth and her young daughter have been killed in an accident involving a quad bike and tractor in Ballycastle. A second daughter has been airlifted to hospital who is in critical condition. The incident happened on the Whitepark Road outside Ballycastle shortly after 4pm this afternoon.
Police air support flew a dedicated HEMS medical team to the scene along with coastguard teams from Ballycastle and Coleraine. HM Coastguard helicopter 199 from Prestwick was also tasked.
One patient was transferred by road ambulance to the Causeway Hospital and subsequently airlifted by the coastguard rescue helicopter to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Major Trauma Centre.
Independent Councillor William McCandless said “My deepest sympathy is extended to the Smyth family on the tragic death of two of their family. Our prayers are with the child currently in RVH.”
Sinn Féin Councillor Cara McShane has said that the community of Ballycastle has been left shocked and saddened by the tragic road accident.
Cllr Cara McShane said:
“The accident this evening has sent shockwaves around Ballycastle.
“The community is shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic accident just one mile outside of the town.
“Typically the B15 would be a busy coastal route at this time of year. However, the roads have been much quieter with the current health crisis.
“The tragic accident has left people reeling and our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected at this time.”
