Woman involved in Valentine’s Day trouble tells court whenever she is in housing estate it is ‘like a war’

A WOMAN who was involved in incidents in a Limavady housing estate on Valentine’s Day told a court on Monday that whenever she is in the area it is “like a war”.

Ciara Craig (38), of Drumachose Park in the town, was speaking at Coleraine Magistrates Court where she appeared via video link from Hydebank Prison.

The defendant admitted charges of assaulting two police officers; breaching a Non-Molestation Order and breaching a Restraining Order by threatening a woman on February 14 this year.

A prosecutor said police received a report that Craig, who was “high intoxicated”, was at an address in breach of a Non-Molestation Order and that she had kicked a fence.

When arrested nearby she kicked out and attempted to bite a PSNI officer and when she had to be transferred to a cell van she kicked another policeman twice.

Defence barrister Thomas McKeever said the defendant did not enter the justice system until the age of 34 when she became addicted to alcohol and things “spiraled out of control”.

The offences before the court brought her record to 106 offences.

The court heard that efforts were being made to get Craig housed away from Drumachose Park and Mr McKeever said the defendant was willing to do that.

The court was told that might be the only way to break the “cycle” of offending.

District Judge Peter King said if matters stayed the same way he believed the defendant would soon rack up 200 offences.

He said Craig needed help with her addictions and also needed a new address.

He hoped by putting her on Probation for a year with a condition that she must take part in whatever programme is suggested by officers it would be the solution.

The defendant was also ordered to do 75 hours of Community Service.
