Emergency crews responded to a ‘major incident’ on the North Coast today where a young man has died after a ‘freak accident’ while taking part in a watersports activity close to Dunluce Castle.
Coastguard teams from Ballycastle and Coleraine, Rescue 199 from Prestwick, NIAS, RNLI and the PSNI were called around 5pm.
MLA Maurice Bradley said ;
“It’s a tragedy and I would express my deepest sympathy to the immediate family and extended family circle on their loss. The north coast is a wonderful place but a very dangerous place and I would urge caution in and around the cliff edges and rocks.”
A spokesperson for Coasteering NI said “With Coasteering becoming more popular in recent years, please use experienced guides to enjoy this activity, and if you really must do it on your own, please please use the proper safety equipment, a buoyancy aid and helmet are a must!”
Police said the death is not being treated as suspicious.
