A man has died and another casualty was taken to hospital following an early morning RTC on the Glenshane Road close to The Ponderosa Bar & Restaurant.
The collision, involving a silver-coloured Volvo car and a tanker lorry, was reported to police at 5:20am. Emergency services attended the scene where the driver of the Volvo was pronounced dead.
The driver of the tanker lorry was taken to hospital for treatment of what are believed to be not serious injuries.
Glenshane Road remains closed, between Main Street on Dungiven and the Tobermore Road/Glenshane Road junction, and a number of diversions are in place as officers conduct enquiries at the scene of the collision.
Anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have captured it on their dash cam or who witnessed the collision and has not yet spoken to police, is asked to call officers on 101, quoting reference 233 of 09/08/21.
A NIAS spokesperson said "The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a 999 call at 05.15 on Monday, 09 August 2021 following reports of a two-vehicle RTC in the Glenshane Road area of Dungiven. NIAS despatched one Emergency crew to the scene. Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, one patient was taken to Altnagelvin Area Hospital by ambulance."
The Glenshane Road remains closed. Diversions are in place at the junction of Tobermore Rd and Glenshane Rd, and at the junction of Garvagh Rd and Main St, Dungiven, and at the junction of Lisnamuck Rd and Lisnamuck Hill.
Translink 212 services currently cannot serve Dungiven at present. Intending passengers are advised to make their way to the junction of Station Road and Garvagh Road for pick up.
