Mental health support group opening in Sperrin

Mental health support group opening in Sperrin

AWARE, the depression charity for Northern Ireland is supporting members of the local community in Sperrin to set up a mental health support group. The group meets on the first Tuesday of every month in the Feeny community centre, and the third Tuesday of every month in the Learmount community centre. The next meetings will take place on Tuesday 5th April at 7:30pm and Tuesday 19th April 7:30pm respectively.

The peer-led group welcomes people living with mental ill-health as well as their family members and carers. Attendees can speak freely about how they are feeling, and connect with others who understand and are going through similar experiences. Living with mental ill-health can feel isolating sometimes, so sharing information with others can help you realise that you are not alone and share helpful coping strategies.

Caroline McLoughlin, Support Services Officer at AWARE is delighted to help the Sperrin community set-up their own support groups, stating:

“We are delighted to have been contacted by local people in Sperrin who want to help their community. Talking to other people who know what you are going through, can be an important step in your journey to recovery from mental ill-health. The research behind peer-support shows that it can improve your wellbeing, help build your support network, and make you feel more confident.’
