A former Greenisland nursing home is to be demolished and replaced with 18 new apartments, if a redevelopment plan is approved.
A planning application has been lodged with Mid and East Antrim Borough Council for the demolition of Ravenhill Private Nursing Home at Shore Road and construction of new homes on the site.
Last February, proposals to shut the facility were made public but it was given a temporary reprieve in March as part of efforts to deal with the coronavirus crisis with the home agreeing to delay the closure with residents able to remain until a review was carried out in July 2020.
In June, families were asked to work with the Northern Health and Social Care Trust to seek alternative placements as soon as possible and a number of residents began to transfer to other appropriate care homes.
Residents and 65 staff members were said to be “devastated” at the shock announcement of the home’s closure which was blamed on financial pressures.
An online petition to save the Greenisland home which could accommodate 38 residents attracted 1,600 signatures.
The new properties will be accompanied by carparking and landscaping on the site overlooking Belfast Lough if the plans are given the go-ahead.
