A Portstewart Councillor has expressed his disappointment that for a modest cost of £2163 the National Trust decided not to apply for Blue Flag Status for Portstewart Strand when 5 neighbouring Beaches applied and were successfully awarded.
Councillor Mark Fielding said "£2163 is the cost the National Trust would have had to pay for a single beach decreasing for any other beaches in their ownership. Disappointment has been expressed by the public that they did not apply for Blue Flag Status for Portstewart Strand."
"The National Trust in recent years have increased the cost of parking on Portstewart Strand and therefore there is an expectation by the public that they would continue to maintain and apply for Blue Flag Status which is a benchmark for standards.
"Just over £2000 would have been a modest cost for the National Trust to pay to continue with the internationally recognised Blue Flag status for Portstewart Strand which neighbouring beaches in ownership of the local Council applied and were awarded."
