Ballycastle Firefighter appointed head of Greater Manchester Fire Service.

A Northern Irish firefighter has been appointed as one of the most senior fire commanders in the UK.

The firefighter of 25 years, Peter O’Reilly will be taking over as Chief of the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service in June.

Mr O’Reilly is from Ballycastle and most of his time as a firefighter has been served in Belfast and he took the position of Area Commander in 2009, before he moved to Manchester in 2011.

Mr O’Reilly’s new position comes with a healthy salary of around £150,000, covers an area of 500 square miles with a population of approximately 2.5 million people.
