Following announcements from Education Minister, John O’Dowd yesterday, the Irish National Teacher’s organisation are planning industrial action, including a strike on Friday, 13th March.
The ballot was conducted among the 6,647 members from schools and colleges against the Department and resulted in a 34.45% return, 78.67% in favour of strike action and a 97.02% majority in favour of industrial action short of strike.
The Minister told the assembly that 500 teachers and 1,000 support staff could lose their jobs because of his budget.
The union’s Northern Secretary, Gerry Murphy said the ballot results mean that on Friday, March 13, INTO members will stand with trade union colleagues in demonstrations organised by the Northern Ireland Committee of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions.
