Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald said the Irish government has a responsibility to defend and promote Ireland’s interest in Brexit negotiations.
The Chair of the Agriculture, Environment & Rural Affairs committee said:
“Theresa May all but confirmed that Britain will not continue to be part of the European Single Market.
“The implications of this for the north, with our strong reliance on cross-border trade, particularly in terms of the agri-food sector can not be overstated.
“The Irish government has a responsibility to defend and promote Ireland’s interest.
“Brexit is entirely counter to Irish national interests and a special designated status for the North of Ireland to remain within the EU must be secured.
“The people of the north voted to remain as part of the EU and that vote needs to be recognised and respected.”
