DUP must end its silence on Paisley probe’ – McGuigan

The DUP leadership should ‘end its silence’ on its latest investigation into the activities of North Antrim MP Ian Paisley, Sinn Féin MLA Philip McGuigan has said:

Philip McGuigan commented:

“The DUP announced in December that it was investigating the latest allegations against their MP Ian Paisley, which centred on a lavish holiday he took to the Maldives.

“Since then we have heard nothing from the DUP party leadership despite the very serious concerns about who paid for the holiday and any possible connections to the government of the Maldives.

“The public is entitled to know who paid for this holiday and why Ian Paisley had not registered the trip with the authorities at Westminster.

“Questions also arise about Ian Paisley’s relationship with the government of the Maldives, which had been criticised by the UN over allegations of human rights abuses.

“All of this comes on the heels of Ian Paisley’s suspension from the British House of Commons following his failure to declare lavish family holidays in Sri Lanka.

“Support for human rights abusing regimes will come as no surprise but the electorate of North Antrim are entitled to answers to the serious questions raised by these allegations.

“I have called on the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards to investigate the claims but Ian Paisley’s own party leadership should also end its silence and confirm what action the party intends to take in light of this latest scandal.”
