Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) recorded its busiest period yesterday with a significant increase in operational activity since the current spell of hot weather.

Assistant Chief Fire & Rescue Officer, Alan Walmsley said, “From 08:00 hrs Tuesday 10th July – 08:00 hrs Wednesday 11th July our Regional Control Centre dealt with 348 calls – up 6% on the previous day.  Total incidents attended rose by over 12% and Firefighters attended 90 gorse fires across Northern Ireland.  The number of other incidents attended also increased by over 15% to a total of 105, including 13 bonfire related incidents.

From Tuesday 26th June NIFRS has responded to 4948 calls, mobilised to 2587 incidents of which 1169 have been gorse fires.

“It has been an extremely busy period and I want to thank all Firefighters, Regional Control Centre and Support Staff for their exceptional commitment, unstinting efforts and sterling work over recent weeks.

“As we approach the 11th night – traditionally one of our busiest – I’m appealing to the local community for their support to ensure that if Firefighters are attending bonfire incidents that they are able to carry out their job without fear of attack or harassment.

“Our well-rehearsed contingency arrangements are currently in place and our Command Room is operational to monitor and maintain emergency cover across Northern Ireland.

“All necessary operational personnel from across the organisation are available to deal with the demands of the current conditions.  We have additional appliances and crews on standby for deployment as and when required.

“Our number one priority is to keep the public and Firefighters safe whilst we deal with these challenging conditions.”
