NIFRS declares major incident in Ballymoney

Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) has declared a major incident in Ballymoney this evening.

Over 100 firefighters are in attendance including 9 Officers, 15 pumping appliances and 10 specialist appliances at the former Fleming Poultry Factory.  

Huge plumes of smoke were seen rising in the area from around 4.30pm this afternoon.

A PSNI spokesperson said "Motorists are advised to avoid the Ballymena Road area of Ballymoney due to a large fire. Please seek alternative routes for your journey.

Additionally, anyone living nearby is asked to keep their windows and doors closed."

Council staff are on standby to open the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre if further evacuations are required in the area.  

The cause of fire is under investigation.
