Last month we revealed that Regatta had intentions of opening premises in Coleraine, specifically at the former Top Shop store.
Today we can confirm that planning has been submitted for illuminated shopfront signage.
Councillor William McCandless welcomed the news that Regatta are set to come to the town. "We all appreciate the past 19 months have not been easy on the High Street coming after a trend of steady decline that had been happening for a decade which was due to a combination of factors.
"Having said that, I don’t feel the decline is irreversible or indeed inevitable, and with incentives and assistance from Government and local innovation, prosperity can again come back to the hearts of our towns. I don’t accept that the High Streets are dying, rather they are in a state of transition and it needs to be determined what the new High Street will look like.
"It certainly has been dispiriting to witness the number of closures we have had in Coleraine town centre, but it is extremely encouraging news to hear that Regatta is showing faith in our town and setting up shop in the former Top Shop premises.
"I am delighted they have decided to open a store in Coleraine, they will be an asset to our High Street."
Regatta is an English family-owned outdoor and leisure clothing company which has been established in Manchester since 1981. It competes with Karrimor, Peter Storm and Slazenger.
MLA Maurice Bradley also welcomed the news that Coleraine will welcome a new retailer to the town centre. "I am delighted that this prime site, in the heart of the town centre, has been leased. It is good news for locals, for visitors coming to shop in Coleraine, and good news on the jobs front."
