The number of sex offenders living in the Causeway Coast & Glens Borough has been revealed.
Figures obtained through a freedom of information request to the PSNI reveal that 136 sex offenders are currently living in the borough and are signed on the sex offenders register.
When asked for a break down of figures by town, the police service provided figures for the main populated centres.
Coleraine - 36
Limavady - 31
Ballymoney - 24
Further breakdown of sex offenders in other population centres within Causeway Coast and Glens was withheld, that being 45.
The reasoning provided was that 'releasing the number of registered sex offenders in a specific location with a smaller population has the potential to identify those individuals within the community and incite reprisals against them. There is also a likelihood of an individual being misidentified as a sex offender. Disclosure could put these individuals at risk and impact on their personal safety'.
The PSNI went onto say that 'release of the requested information would be likely to have a detrimental effect on the PSNI’s law enforcement capabilities and the ability of the Service and outside agencies to monitor sex offenders effectively, impacting on police resources and hindering the prevention and detection of crime.'
All 136 offenders were male with 45 being in the County Antrim area of the Causeway Coast and Glens Policing District and 91 within the County Derry/Londonderry area of the Causeway Coast and Glens Policing District.
There are a total of 1,594 Registered Sex Offenders in Northern Ireland. Police say this includes some offenders who have left the jurisdiction but still remain on the system.
