Skate park would be ‘investment in youth’

The calls for a skate park in Portrush continue to grow with MLA Claire Sugden adding her support to the public petition, saying it would mark an investment in young people in the area.

Advocates have been urging the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council for an urban sports facility for many years and it is understood that the council’s Land and Property Committee will soon analyse the case for such a park.

“There has been a large community of skateboard, rollerblade, scooter and BMX users in the town for decades,” said the East Londonderry MLA.

“Different areas around the town have been used by them over the years, but this is not ideal and can create safety issues both for them and other members of the public.

“Having a dedicated space for these urban sports would enable them to thrive and create a hub where people of all ages can engage in these sports.

“Young people are often scrutinised when they gather in groups in town centres – providing a relevant focus for young people in the town would demonstrate our commitment to supporting their interests.

“Many successful skate parks have been created across Northern Ireland, but not many places have the same tradition and community of urban sports as Portrush does. I have no doubt that such a park would be well used and would get young people involved in sport in a new way.”

The profile of skating and urban sports had been raised by the skateboarding success of 13-year-old Team GB skater Sky Brown in winning a bronze medal in the recent Tokyo Olympics.

Ms Sugden added: “Success like this shows what can be achieved by our sportsmen and women if they are given the opportunity to learn, practice and progress.”
