EAST Londonderry MLA Claire Sugden has urged the Executive to resolve the issue of childcare and provide clear guidance to both parents and childminders.

There should be a joined-up approach from ministers because reopening the economy was reliant on workers being able to arrange care for their children, said the MLA.

“Currently, many parents are faced with the choice of going to work or looking after their children,” she said.

“It’s difficult to see how the economy can get up and running again when this situation exists.”

Safety remained a priority, but people needed clear guidance from government, Ms Sugden said.

Some schools that have been looking after the children of key workers also needed confirmation that funding would be available for them to continue the provision over the summer.

“These schools are keen to provide childcare support for the children of key workers when the normal school year comes to a close, but it is unclear whether they will receive funding for this.”

Ms Sugden will officially ask the minister of education to confirm what plans have been made for this funding, in order that schools and parents are informed.
